APRIL 16 RAPIDLY APPROACHING: Website Provides Free
Tax Filing for Low-Income Working Texas Families
www.icanefile.org (English & Spanish versions)
AUSTIN— Every
year, Texas families leave an estimated $1.2 billion
in potential tax credits in the hands of the federal
government, due to lack of knowledge about the
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). This year, the
Texas Legal Services Center is providing a
user-friendly resource for all Texas families who
want to make sure they claim their share of the $1.2
billion.
The Web site,
www.icanefile.org, will automatically calculate
and file for all potential tax credits, including
the EITC, child tax credit and others. The site has
been authorized by the IRS for safe and effective
self-help tax preparation. Taxpayers who earn less
than $50,000 per year are eligible to use the site
free of charge.
How It Works:
1. Taxpayers log
on to
www.icanefile.org from their home or a local
public library branch;
2. Users go
through a series of secure Web pages inputting
answers to simple, interactive questions;
3. The website
also allows viewing of instructional IRS videos and
educational materials.
