How to Encourage Young Children to Love Music

By Jeslyn Jessy

Music is a wonderful tool. It allows the young children to interact with others in intimate and joyful ways. It helps to develop imagination, invention, creative thinking and communication skills. At the same time, it can also assist to increase their listening skills, memory and concentration. Besides, music also aids in the acquisition of early language skills. I would say most children can sing every word of the Alphabet Song before they can identify a single letter. When they grow older, they are able to learn the sequences and patterns of the language through the lyrics.

In order to encourage your kids to love music, I am here to share with you some practical tips:

• We can make music as an enjoyable tool. What we should do is to allow our children to try all kinds of musical instruments. We should introduce all these instruments to them so that they know different instruments produce different sounds. Let them explore the musical world at their early age.

• It is good if we can let our children to make their decision on what instrument they would like to learn to play. Don’t force them to follow your own interest. They may not like the instrument you suggest.

• Most of the young children like to attend music classes. You can use these classes as an incentive or reward to motivate them. However, if they dislike attending the classes, you should not force them to do so.

• When your children know how to play certain musical instruments, you are advised to make yourself available to play the part of the audience. Young children need someone to reaffirm their effort. They don’t bother how poor their “performance” is. The most important is they need attention. Hence, you should spend some time to accompany them when they play the instruments. You are suggested to allocate time for them to practice the musical instruments at home in a consistent manner.

• Most of the music classes come with formal examinations. You need to understand your children’s needs and preferences. You should allow your kids to decide whether they want to sit for the exam. If they are not ready for assessment, don’t give pressure to them.

Dear parents, you can provide your beloved children the benefits of music regardless of your own ability to play an instrument. Creating a joyful environment is the best gift you can give to your kids.
