Every winter when temperatures decline, water left to run overnight from sprinkler systems can freeze on sidewalks and roadways, causing dangerous icing conditions that threaten public safety.

The City of Plano prohibits the icing of streets and sidewalks; each occurrence is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 per day!

Save money, reduce water waste, and eliminate icing due to over spray and damage to your house during inclement weather by:

• Turning off sprinkler systems. Drought tolerant plants only need water once a month.

• Installing a rain/freeze sensor to automatically shut off a sprinkler system during rain or freezing temperatures. You can save more money by taking advantage of the rebate program offered by the City of Plano for these devices.

• Insulate pipes or faucets in unheated areas before temperatures plummet. You can find pipe wrapping materials at any hardware or building supply store.

• Seal off access doors, air vents, and cracks. DO NOT plug air vents used by your furnace or water heater.

• Allow your indoor faucets to drip a little during cold weather to avoid freezing.
